Another fantastic example of recycled container gardening

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

A fantastic example of container gardening, this time from the Chelsea Flower Show, created as part of the Eden Project, you can imagine it working brilliant in a warehouse apartment conversion or outside a large block of flats.

Coffee, Crap and, err, cuttings

Apologies for that headline there, it was cheesy and mildly offensive (to some), but I wanted to grab your attention and tell you about a bunch of great and really interesting links I came across yesterday.

Current bits and pieces from our life

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Here at Green Renters we spend a lot of time thinking about ways to live sustainably in a rental property. Like everyone, sometimes we find it hard to find time to do everything around the home that we’d like to. But I see it as an ong0ing process rather than a big list of ‘must do now’ items. Finding time to garden can be hard, and finding time to shop ethically even harder.

Bare rooting plants!

Friday, November 6th, 2009

1103plant01.jpgRooting a plant in water allows you to add more green around the house without buying more plants. Simply take a clipping from an existing plant and place it in water. In one week, roots will have begun to grow. Not only do we like the fact that we can spread the greenery (and green) around our house this way, we love the look of rooting a plant in a transparent glass container.

We’ve done this at home to good effect with mint and geraniums.

Spring November Planting!

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

4039509619_a3d79e68db_large We talk a lot at Green Renters about the benefits of growing your own veggies. I’m lucky to have Melbourne Cup Day off work as it’s a public holiday in Melbourne so I’m planning spending at least some of the day in the garden.

Before the festivities begin, you might like to pop down to a local nursery (or bigger places like Bunnings which are always open) to pick yourself up some seedlings.

Great things to plant right now:

  • Silverbeet
  • Parsley
  • Spring Onions
  • Chives
  • Chillies
  • Radishes

Lettuces 2669441399_3eb784f026 (they needn’t take up much space, you can see these ones are planted in a bowl then placed in a sunny spot. Just pick the leaves as needed)

Asian Greens

Asian Greens Labeled Here’s a great resource explaining the differences in asian greens.

Tomatoes

These tumbler tomatoes are a great example of ‘planting up’

Spring gardening is great fun and before you know it you’ll be adding herbs to your own risottos and pastas, fresh mint in your beverages, freshly picked salad….great stuff!
