I’m looking forward to this series. In my own family, we’re tending more and more towards giving only those gifts that are charitable (donations), intangible (chores and favours), or immediately consumable (sweets!)… can’t tell you how much less stressful the holidays have become as a result, and everyone gets to feel good, too.
Oxfam and similar nonprofits have great gift ideas – last year we ordered up a bunch of goats and children’s art supplies and such, for the benefit of villages in the developing world, and had a great time matching each gift to the tastes of the “recipient” here at home.
There’s an unexpected bonus in that we find ourselves giving even more thought to just the *perfect* gift, when not struggling through crowds at the shopping malls in a panic to find something, anything, just to get another item checked off the list!
