What if everyone had a meat free day once a week?

ecard_00061I was excited to read about the town of Ghent in Belgium which started a ‘meat free’ day once a week.

On this day all restaurants serve veggie food only and local officials and residents choose a meat free day in recognition of the impact of meat production on the environment.

A great scheme that should be adopted everywhere!

One Response to “What if everyone had a meat free day once a week?”

  1. Stu Burns Says:

I know all the arguments for and against eating meat, but boycott of meat and meat products will more than likely have two effects:

    1. It will put meat producers off side with non-meat eaters, creating an adversarial environment which is not optimal for co-operative resolution of meat production issues

    2. Mean lower per unit prices for meat products, due to reduced demand, resulting in higher stocking rates and production levels in order for meat producers to cover fixed costs such as farm mortgages, equipment, etc.

Even though vegetarianism in Australia, for example, has been steadily rising for many years, the overall production of meat animals has not responded in any way, and in some cases increased in the last thirty years.

    It’s a curly one.
